I'm not sure if it all tracked, but it was a hell of a performance. It was a powerful scene that involved Lily first trying to trick John, then tapping into her old anger (and accent) as an abused prostitute, and then swirling around in a 180 and deciding that they were both to be the pure blood conquerers of mankind. Though one does have to give it up for Billie Piper, whose performance in front of a terrified John Clare had to take her through several altered states before finally declaring that she and John should murder Victor together. Helstrom Jesse SchedeenOver on the reanimated monster side of the fence, Lily's transformation into some type of femdom conquerer actually felt a bit rushed, as it was only at the end of last week's episode that her psychotic nature crept into the story. Specifically - and this was cool - because he simply was not a happy person. Looking through old photos and conversing with Victor about love, he knew he was not himself. And while it took a big moment (like Evelyn toying around with his thumping doll heart - yuck!) for him to shake loose of her curse, Malcolm still knew something was amiss at the start of this one. Even if it was an easy-to-peg mistake for him to go after Evelyn alone. He's been played for a fool most of the season so it was awesome to see him rip through the veil and take action. But perhaps - now that the "master" thing's been cleared up - he needs to stick around in order to face the man/creature who stole Mina from him in the first place. That still may come in the final two episodes. This season could easily mark the end for him, sure. Not that I want the character to leave the series, but what does truly remain for a man who's lost so much? And so all of it, including the final moments when he was confronted by zombie apparitions of his dead family, felt like a curtain call. Also.did anyone else think, during the episode, that this felt a little like Malcolm's final bow? Him confronting the ghosts of everyone he's lost, freeing himself (with a bit of help from Sembene, the only team member to think something measurably evil was afoot with Malcolm), and then chasing after Evelyn for revenge? It felt like he was about to get killed off.

It was also great to hear that the witches are now being mobilized because the Devil, the Hell-bound half, failed in his plot to possess Vanessa last season. And they're both using separate tricks and traps to get at her. Both are after Vanessa because both come from the same original dark lord.

Now we know that Lucifer and Dracula (or whatever name he'll take on the series) were "cleaved apart" from the same fallen angel and became separate entities/brothers - one on Earth (to drink the blood of the living) and one in Hell (to eat the souls of the dead). And while the first season placed the vampire storyline and the demon possession storyline in separate corners, Season 2 seemed to merge them. It appeared as though everything, including those vamps, was the Devil's doing. Obviously, the vampires and witches were coming from the same dark place and emboldened with the same evil mission, but things seemed to be totally centered on Lucifer, which made me wonder about the foreign aristocrat who Mina took up with back in the first year storyline. At the top of the season, I admit to being confused about who the "master" was, as two malevolent forces could claim that name. The whole "Dracula being the Devil's brother" item was an important reveal for me.

Providing us with a glimpse at Dreadful's assorted "B Team" while Vanessa sought sanctuary out in the countryside, this chapter not only brought Season 1's unseen "master" (aka Dracula) back into the storyline mix, but it revealed Dorian's portrait, killed off Angelique, spun out Lily's madness, and saw Sir Malcolm, essentially, free himself from Evelyn's enchantment.

Though this week's Penny Dreadful, "Memento Mori," lacked damaged lead heroes Ethan and Vanessa, it still stood out as being one of the most revealing, suspenseful episodes of the series to date.
